The Rose Of Denmark was situated at 78 Shirley Street. This
was a Watneys pub that dated back to 1867. It closed in 1993 and was
demolished in the late 2000s (see photo of site below). Actually left to fall down of its own accord
with possible assistance by local vandals might be a more accurate way of
putting it. Before the closure of the local docks it opened at 6am. The name
Rose of Denmark refers to Princess Alexandra of Denmark who married Prince
Edward (later Edward VII) in 1863. There is another pub in E16 called The
Princess Alexandra, which is still open. |
