The Wheatsheaf, Newbury

The Wheatsheaf was situated on Shaw Road. This pub had been owned by Watney Mann (formerly Ushers) since 1925 and closed in 1971. It is now in residential use.

My grandfather was the last landlord of the Wheatsheaf his name was Albert Little and he retired in 1965,I remember the cellar steps being very steep but I was only 5 years old the last time I was there
There was a public bar that was gentlemen only and a small snug where my grandmother waited on the customers, mostly ladies !

I lodged at The Wheatsheaf July to December 1965, the landlord was Peter Haines who, with his wife, had been there less than a year. There was not a cellar with steep stairs, the barrels were at ground floor level in the room behind the bar. There was only one bar entered through the front door. A short passage led to the side door for customers to go around to the rear of the building to the outside toilet. at the same time Peter Haines's father was the landlord of a pub in Newbury Market Square.
