The Fox was situated on Woodcote Road and is now
used as an Indian restaurant called the Palm Tree. |
|
|
|
The restaurant has now also closed and
the site is being redeveloped. |

The building has now been demolished with a new
housing estate, Fox Heath Gardens, built on the site. |

The Fox was one of 3 pubs north of Reading
selling the delectable Gales beer from Horndean in Hampshire. There were no
Gales pubs in Reading - just the aforementioned 3 north of Caversham. The
Fox served a decent pint - either ordinary or special bitter or mild - but
it was a little too far away for me to be a regular there. Instead, I used
to drink at the Pack Saddle in Mapledurham, which was accessible by bus from
Reading. |

From 1979 we lived for 16 years in 'Sunnyside",
Cane End (a former tea gardens), which had a unique postcode. That bungalow
was built by the Paddock family and, up until to her death, was lived in by
the sister of Mr Paddock who was living next door to us.
There were four different tenants of the Fox pub during the time we lived in
Cane End. The second tenants were a male couple. The third were Chris & Marj.
Many evenings we would take our White Shepherd Dog, Trillian, to the pub
where Customers would feed her and at closing time Chris would let his two
Rottweilers into the bar to play with her.
When we left Cane End for Australia the Fox had been turned into a Chef &
Brewer pub/restaurant. After leaving the UK we heard it had then become an
Indian restaurant! |

I stayed there many years ago 1968
as my aunt Betty and uncle John owned it. I remember a woodland nearby
where we would walk the dogs in between working hours. |
