The Matilda Tavern was situated at 100 Matilda Street. This pub, originally a coaching inn, opened in 1825 and closed in 2005.

Peter Malcolm		When I became 18,my father Alexander Malcom,took me in this pub. He pointed out the swinging sign depicting queen Matilda, the wife of Alexander King of Scots, from whom we are descended. I was dismayed to see,on a recent visit to Sheffield, that the pub is in a decrepit condition and the sign is somewhat mutilated. Nevertheless i would be delighted to buy the sign and restore it to its former elegance. I would consider buying the pub and the cobbled courtyard to boot if it was safe from a demolition order and would help to restore it as a working tavern or as a museum of latter day taverns.
