My great great grandfather Councillor
Mark Davy owned it until his death in the late 1800s. His son Harry then
inherited it. Harry passed away in 1908, so not sure who took over ownership
then. I visited the hotel in 2011. It was boarded up by then, likely
condemned. Was hoping to take away a souvenir of the place, but understand
it’s since been demolished. |

My Grandad, Thomas Lavelle, was the landlord of
this pub from some point in the 1930s on through the war years. I'm not sure
at which point he retired from the job, but prior to this pub, he was
landlord at The Lord Nelson Hotel in Mexborough and at the Plug and Feathers
in Glapwell, Derbyshire. My mother told us stories of growing up here. She
said the men driving the barges along the adjacent canal would stop at the
hotel and there was a stable in back for the horses pulling the barges.
