The Cricketers, Westcott

The Cricketers was situated on Guildford Road. This pub closed in 2007 and is now used as a curry house.

A lovely village pub, with a public bar and dart board, a snug and a saloon, plus slide-up-the-window Jug-and-Bottle. The snug (or saloon?) had a piano and my friend, who was the chapel organist, would play Scott Joplin without a score, with a pint on the top of the piano. That village life has gone, now you all drink supermarket alcohol at home. The building is now derelict, the Indian restaurant failed (not surprising really, Westcott is a small village).

As seen on BBC "Homes Under the Hammer" 10 Apr 2025, the property was sold at auction in Feb 2023. Downstairs converted to a business unit, with a view to renting out desks for those wanting occasional 'office space', and upstairs 3- bed flat renovated.

Michael White 1948/1986 The mention of the chapel organist playing Scott Joplin music on the piano in the bar is true ! It was me ! I should mention I was the reserve organist and could only play hymns that I knew as I could not read music-and still cannot. I am now 78 and residing in Northern Italy. My parents rented rooms at the PH after WW2,and my Birth Certificate has The Cricketers as the address. My father was the local butcher.
