Old Inn, Postcombe

The Old Inn was situated on London Road. This pub was previously known as The New Inn and was converted to a Chinese restaurant following closure.

In 1974 this pub was named the "New Inn", owned by Courage (Central) Ltd., for whom I worked as a Divisional Surveyor based at the brewery at Reading. One day while I was having lunch, my secretary rushed in with a message saying there'd been an accident at the New Inn at Postcombe. A lorry had veered off the A40 and crashed into the building. This was just before the M40 motorway between Stokenchurch and Great Milton was opened, so the A40 outside the pub was the main route between London and Oxford at that point.
When I arrived at the pub I found the lorry had crashed into the front left corner of the building and was still stuck in the wall. The ground floor walls had been demolished but the upper walls and the roof above were all being supported by the lorry. Very luckily, neither the lorry driver nor anyone in the pub was seriously hurt, but the lorry could not be moved for fear of some of the building collapsing and so the pub had to be closed temporarily on safety grounds. A building contractor from High Wycombe attended the next day and provided temporary support, allowing the lorry to be removed. The front corner of the pub had to be rebuilt and the Public Bar was out of use for some months.
