The Stocks Hotel was situated on Manchester Road. This pub closed in 2017. It was the headquarters of Walkden rugby (1878 - 1899), who played in the Lancashire Union initially, and then joined the Northern Union (later to be known as the Rugby League). They played in Stocks Field behind the hotel and were known as The Stocksmen.
