I worked here as an evening barman around 1972-73, usually in the public bar. Back then we also had a lounge bar at the right hand side of the pub as you looked at it from the road, with the public bar on the left and an off-licence in the centre.
The public bar had a tiled floor and was very basic. Men came in from work in their working clothes and had a drink, played dominoes, cards or darts. Some would stay most of the evening, but on a Friday, others would go home and come back, fed, washed and changed, with their wives for a drink in the lounge bar.
The lounge bar was a drinking haunt of Jimmy Greaves, who lived in the town, and his business partner. They would often be found in a corner there with their wives. West Ham goalkeeper Bobby Ferguson was also often in on a Saturday after a match when The Hammers were playing at home.
Back then it was a friendly local, and there was rarely any trouble. The landlord was Stan, if my memory serves me well, and I enjoyed my time working there. I only left when I was offered better money at The Sun, in London Road, Romford.
