The Portobello

The Portobello, Coggeshall

The Portobello was situated on Bridge Street. This pub is now in residential use. Behind this building was the Little Coggeshall Brewery, known as the Gardeners Brewery from 1827, which closed in 1941.

My parents, Alf and Anita Berners, took this pub in 1972 until 1980 so I grew up there and went to school firstly at St Peter’s School, Coggeshall and then Alec Hunter, Braintree. It was a very popular pub and I have fond memories – particularly of its friendly ghost!
