The Cooperage was situated on Durham Road. This pub was originally known as The Wheatsheaf. A pub has stood on the site since the 1830s, with the current building from 1880. The Cooperage closed 31Jan 2014 and converted to a mini-supermarket.

Robert Wilkinson 1948/1956 I was born upstairs in this pub. At the time my parents Rose & Harry Wilkinson ran the pub. It had a blue Star then and was a Newcastle Breweries pub catering to the miners.
