The Crown & Anchor was situated on the High Street. This pub was present by 1796 and rebuilt in 1892 after subsidence damage. It closed in the 1960s.

In 1912 The Crown and Anchor was one of the stopping places for Carl Sterns Clancy and Walter Storey on their Henderson motor cycles. They were the first motorcyclists to circumnavigate the World. Walter Storey dropped out of the journey returning home to America leaving Clancy to complete the journey on his own.
