The Rabbit was situated at 50 Gold

has now been demolished. |

My great great grandfather, Henry Nixon moved
here in 1891, having married into the Edwards family, who owned the pub and
brewery as well as several other pubs. He became licensee shortly after. He
was an accomplished cricketer in his younger years and a member of the MCC.
He died in 1915 whilst living at 48a Eden street. At some stage the brewery
part of the business was sold to Bailey and Tebbut and the actual brewery
site was sold to Wood and sons for their mineral water operation. The family
kept the rest of the pub business, 12 pubs until they were sold to Greene
King in the mid 20s. |

From Cambridgeshire Heritage: |
|
The Kite was a major centre of the Cambridge
brewing industry. The Rabbit brewery was located at 50 Gold Street,
associated with a public house of the same name. The brewery was in
existence by 1864. The pub and brewery were taken over by Richard Edwards by
1869, and by the 1890s the brewery was moved to the other site of the
street, at 11 Gold Street. Trade ceased in 1911, when the brewery was taken
over as a mineral water works. |
