Red Lion

The Red Lion was situated on Woburn Road. This pub was present by 1780 and closed in 2004. It has now been demolished and replaced by new housing.

From Bedfordshire Heritage:
On 10th July 1780 the keeper of the Red Lion was William Bates when he insured his house for £65; it was described as "brick, timber pannelled, with brick and plaster built and thatched situate at Heath and Reach". It had two barns but no stables. By 1806 the Red Lion was in the hands of John Morris, an Ampthill brewer. The publican was Thomas Belgrove and his family ran the pub for the rest of the 19th century. In 1872 the licensee Mrs. Mary Ann Belgrove was reported for "unjust measures" and the licence transferred to her son. At some time the old pub was rebuilt and its thatch replaced with tiles. In the early 20th century the pub was kept by Frederick Stone. A back room at the Red Lion was kept as a mortuary for sand workers killed in the pits. In the 1990's the Red Lion was partly demolished and converted into housing.

Tom Peckham c1950 One of my uncles on my mothers side was the landlord some years back, I think from memory around 1950. I remember staying there. My mother was born in heath. Her maiden name was Ashby. An aunt owned the village shop.
