The Compasses was situated at 77 High Street, closing in 1992, and now used as a private house. Present by 1816, it was known as The Red Cow until the 1820s.

Publican in 1827 was James Horn. The last publicans were Glyndwr John Gauntlett and Christine Patricia Moore.

Its 1827 valuation shows it as a freehold public house,  occupied by James Horn, with a yard containing a range of substantial buildings consisting of a wash house, a four stalled stable, standing for six horses with a loft over; a garden and orchard, and two enclosures of meadow land near the premises containing together 7a. 0r. 23p.
